The Way We Were

Online I recently stumbled across a reminder of something I loved in my childhood.

In the UK we have a well known box of chocolates called Milk Tray which up to the early 1980s also came as a bar of chocolate, hmmmm, imagine that snapping off a lime barrel chocolate then a hazelnut in caramel then a turkish delight then an almond whirl.

What do you miss from your childhood, perhaps like me something fairly trivial like a chocolate bar or a game perhaps the location of your regular family holiday or maybe a favourite place to visit or a long lost best friend...?

I don't remember there being a Milk Tray bar... but they should bring it back!
I've just rediscovered Cherryade ,,, we use to drink it in the 80's ,, and there is a funny story but I won't share it because you had to be there really,... but it's lovely and refreshing once you get past the slightly medicine type smell

You must google it ...the pieces were even shaped like the chocolates...oh yes Cherryade was nice...there was also exotically Blackcurrantade, Limeade, Orangeade and pineappleade that was too sweet even for my taste

A few decades ago (before credit and debit cards), travelling dharma bum-style in Europe, I crossed on bicycle from Switzerland into France without changing money, on the Saturday before a Monday bank holiday. Too stubborn to turn around and go back into Switzerland (reluctant to climb back up the Alp I had just descended), I rode through the 3-day weekend with only the few scraps of food I was carrying.

Tuesday morning, I was the village bank's first customer and proceeded directly to the village patisserie. Over 35 years later, I still remember every scrumptious bite of those pastries.

Yes family vacation to the NJ beach for one or two weeks. Little shore home soaking distance to the ocean or the bay. Hot summer sand to hot to walk on bare foot. Make you run into the water. With your canvas blow up rafts. Riding waves in to the beach or paddling around the ocean. Knowing the Good Humor Icecream truck is coming soon waiting to hear him ring his bell mom handing you 50cents to get my daily Chocolate Egg Claire ice cream bar with nuts. Yes thoughs are the day I miss. After dinner go back to the beach and fly kites watch the go higher and higher then do trick with them. I was 2 to 12 years old. Then we got a camper and started to travel.

Paying 17p for a Mars Bar. What are they now? About 75p? And no doubt they've shrunk in size accordingly.

That's what's I miss, getting confectionery that looks pretty good value for money.

Sherbert dips and Ruffle bars........I used to bite the ends of the liquorice and sook the sherbert through it..... And Raspberry Ruffle bars were delicious. They do something similar in Aus' but I can't remember what they call them there. Haven't seen either here for donkeys years.

I used to love that Milk Tray bar, that was a proper luxury to us back in the day.

And then there were the family hols, I still remember the landmarks that evoked the happy times to come, I often drive by them these days and think back wistfully........

Another good wee post McNeed!

I miss playing "grab ass" with the neighborhood girls, or as we called it "goose goose". One of the girls came up with that name.
